DEBORAH "DEB" SPUNGEN (née Alterman), passed away at the age of 87 on September 12, 2024, in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Born on April 10, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA, she leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and accomplishment. Beloved wife of 54 years to the late Frank “Sonny” Spungen: Loving mother of Susan Spungen (Steve Kasher), David Spungen (Aliana) and the late Nancy Spungen; Devoted grandmother of Ella and Joseph Spungen; Caring aunt of Dean and Ellie Becker. Deb was many things: teacher, entrepreneur, salesperson, author, leader, speaker, advocate. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1954, University of Pennsylvania in 1958 with a BA, and received her Master of Social Service degree (MSS) in 1989 and Master of Law and Social Policy (MLSP) in 1990 from Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work. Deborah became a teacher in the Philadelphia public school system, and started her own natural foods store, The Earth Shop, in Jenkintown, PA the early 1970s. She was the founder and Executive Director of the Anti-Violence Partnership of Philadelphia. She was an advocate and voice for crime victims. She was the author of three books. Relatives and friends are invited to Graveside Services Sunday 11 AM precisely at King David Memorial Park, (Sec. BB), 3594 Bristol Road, Bensalem, PA 19020. Shiva will be observed Sunday at the home of Joslyne and Roger Braunfeld from 1:30 – 5 PM . Shiva will continue Monday, at the home of Aliana and David Spungen from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Anti-Violence Project of Philadelphia, www.avpphila.org in memory of Deborah.
