MORLEY
DAVID JEROME, on Sept. 2, 2005. Beloved husband of 48 years to Ruth Finkelstein Morley; loving father of of Phillip and Martin Morley; grandfather to Alexa, Brianna and Jessica Morley. Born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York, David quit school in the 7th. grade to help support his family. During the Korean War, he proudly served with the U.S. Army Medical Corp for 8 years and earned his GED. It was during his military service that he met and married Ruth Finkelstein from Philadelphia. At the conclusion of his military service, the couple moved to Kentucky so that David could attend Kentucky State Teachers College. They then returned to Philadelphia where David completed his studies at Temple University and received his Bachelors of Science in Education. His love of teaching and desire to help improve the lives of others inspired him to accept a teaching job with the School District of Philadelphia. While with the School District, he worked for over 45 years as a grade school teacher, union organizer and beloved teacher to his students. David also supported his community as well as his family. He received a Citizens Commendation from the Police Commissioner for chasing down and apprehending a purse-snatcher that had invaded his elementary school. He was a hard working father who, in addition to teaching, owned and operated a hot dog establishment in South Philadelphia, worked as a Cottage Parent at the Assoc. of Jewish Children and chauffeured children to Hebrew School at 18th. and Spruce. His close friends knew him as a man with a heart of gold who enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends and family. Ever the New Yorker, David enjoyed sharing his opinions and would often say "You're entitled to an opinion as long as it's mine!" Honoring his last and final wishes, arrangements and services will be private. Those wishing to make a donation in his name are invited to send contributions to the Thomas Jefferson Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
