David Axler

David A. Axler, 71, of Gouldsboro, died on Monday. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Geri Kassoway Axler.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the beloved son of the late Nathan and Elsie Axler. He was a graduate of Delhaas High School, class of 1959. He went on to achieve a BS from Pennsylvania State University (1963); an MS (1966) and Ph.D. in Microbiology (1969) from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. David completed his post-doctoral work in virology at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia. He was a professor of microbiology and immunology at Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine from 1975 to 1998. He also held the position of acting dean, vice president of academic affairs, vice president for research and dean for educational affairs, and vice president for student affairs during that period. From 2001 to present, David was a professor emeritus at Temple University School of Medicine after holding the position of associate dean for student affairs, professor and course director for microbiology and immunology at Temple School of Podiatry, Medicine and Dentistry. After happily retiring to Gouldsboro, David took the position of associate dean for student affairs and professor of microbiology and immunology at Commonwealth Medical College.

Loved by colleagues and students, David had an accomplished career. He had a great love for his college, was so very proud of his students and had tremendous respect for his colleagues. He was extremely touched and honored to be asked to hood the first graduating class this May. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a true role model who always put himself before others. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is also survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and John Casiello; grandchildren, Gabriel and Leah; sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Bruce Greenberg; brothers-in-law, Richard and Walter Kassoway; sister-in-law, Carol Kassoway; many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral service on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Goldsteins' Rosenberg's Raphael Sacks Suburban North, 310 Second St., Pike, Southampton. Interment, King David Memorial Park.

Family will return to the residence of Lauren and John Casiello.

Memorial donations may be made to a scholarship fund set up in his name. Make checks payable to Commonwealth Medical College in honor of David A. Axler, 525 Pine St., Scranton, PA 18509.
