Carl Lieberman passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026 in Akron, Ohio at the age of 84. Carl was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 29, 1941, he was the son of Edward and Marion (Katz) Lieberman. He graduated from Temple University with a B.A. Political Science, and the University of Pittsburgh where he obtained his M.A. and PHD in Political Science. Carl taught at The University of Akron from 1967 to 2003 where he touched the lives of many students over his 36-year career.
Professor Lieberman taught courses in American government and politics, and developed courses in Canadian politics, and politics and religion. He was the author of numerous articles and papers. He also wrote and edited several books, including Government and Politics in Ohio, Government Politics and Public Policy in Ohio, Making Economic Policy, and Understanding American Government and Politics.
Beyond his brilliance and achievements, Carl was an inspiration and truly special human being who laughed easily and due to his highly intelligent nature, he never missed a beat. His integrity, loyalty, and gentleness were obvious to all that knew and loved him. But Carl also possessed a tenacity and strong spirit, and his passion and generosity helped countless others less fortunate as he supported many meaningful causes.
While a voracious reader, Carl also enjoyed travel, dining out, attending museums, and going to the symphony. He placed a high value on family and maintained many solid friendships over the years. To say that Carl was a pleasure and easy to be around would be an understatement. And calling him a true mensch (Yiddish for person; defined as someone with exceptional integrity, honor, and decency…with qualities like kindness, responsibility, empathy, and courage….just about says it all.
Predeceased by his parents and his brother Allan Lieberman, he is survived by his nieces, Janine & Chrissa Lieberman, and second cousin, Edith Lane.
Relatives and friends are invited to Graveside Services, Friday, 12:30 PM precisely at Har Jehuda Cemetery (Sec. BNE), Upper Darby, PA. In appreciation of the wonderful community that surrounded Carl in Ohio, a service will be held in Ohio in the weeks to come. Details to follow.
