Born in 1935 in Philadelphia to the late Jacob and Minnie Klein, Burt attended West Philadelphia High School and earned his B.A. and Ed.M. at Temple University. After a stint in the Army Reserve at Fort Knox, KY, he began his career in education teaching English at Lincoln High School in Philadelphia and then served as principal of Samuel Gompers Elementary School in Wynnefield and of the historic Rudolph Walton School in Strawberry Mansion. He was president of the Schoolman’s Club of Philadelphia and of the Principal’s Association of the School District. Burt later became Assistant Superintendent of District Four of the School District of Philadelphia, working closely with then Superintendent Dr. Constance E. Clayton. Following 30 years with the school district, Burt became a professor of rhetoric and speech at The College of New Jersey where he was consistently ranked by students as the top-rated teacher at the school.
Burt was also a noted lecturer. He spoke on a variety of subjects on the Oceana and Crystal cruise ships and for many years at the Abington Library, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and before many community groups. He has over a dozen episodes of his motivational series “Burton Klein Speaks” available on YouTube.
He had a passion for travel, with a vast knowledge of cities and sites to see around the country and the world. He spent weekends for a time as a travel agent, helping plan trips for friends and family.
Burt was married to his beloved wife Sandra for 67 years, having met as students at Temple University. They were inseparable, travelling the world visiting nearly every country, sailing on over 40 cruises including a transatlantic crossing, and enjoying great restaurants, theatre, and good times together with their many friends.
Burt is survived by his adored wife Sandra, brother-in-law Mark Waldman, his loving nieces and nephews, and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to graveside funeral services on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 2701 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose PA.
