With sadness we share the passing of Bernice (Gendelman) Rosenberg z"l. Bernice died in her home in Penn Valley on April 15, 2024, on her birthday at the age of 97. She had just celebrated her birthday with her daughters, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren the day before.
She was the beloved wife of Norman Rosenberg z”l, and devoted mother of Harriet (Marshall) Baker and Seyna (Larry) Abel. She was the proud grandmother of Dayna (Larry) Weintraub, Ilyse (Hilton) Cohen, Jessica (Greg) Phillips, Dori Abel (fiancé Ivor Asztalos) and Nora Abel (fiancé Michael Craig); and great-grandmother of Jonah and Noam Weintraub, Juliette and Brody Cohen, Hallie, Ethan and Ben Phillips. Bernice was excited to have been called to the torah on her 96th birthday at the celebration of the bar mitzvah of her oldest great-grandson, Jonah Weintraub, and was looking forward to the weddings this year of her youngest granddaughters Dori and Nora.
Born in Philadelphia to Harry and Dora Gendelman, and sister to Seymour Gendelman z”l a proud graduate of Girls’ High and Peirce College, Bernice worked side by side with her brother and father in the family pharmacy in South Philadelphia. Later, after she and Norman married, they worked together in their store, for over 40 years, serving their South Philadelphia neighborhood. In later years, they moved from above the store, to Mt. Airy, and then to Cheltenham, finally retiring to condominium living in Penn Valley. Although Norman passed shortly after they moved to Oak Hill, Bernice enjoyed over 30 years there, chairing the condominium association’s social committee, and serving as a member of the county election board for many years. Bernice enjoyed sitting at the condominium pool (never going in the water) with her neighbors and friends, talking about her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bernice was an avid reader and well-known to the staff of the Gladwyne library, where she would regularly check out five books at a time.
Contributions in Bernice’s memory may be made to the synagogues of her children, including Temple Beth Shalom of Cherry Hill, NJ https://www.tbsonline.org/ or to Temple Adath Israel of the Main Line in Merion Station https://www.adathisrael.org/waystogive, or to Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel in Center City Philadelphia, https://bzbi.org/
