Obituary

Bernice was born March 16, 1930 in Philadelphia, the daughter of immigrant parents, Bertha and Jacob Osterneck. They were dedicated store owners in South Philadelphia who worked so their daughters enjoyed wonderful family life. Shirley was the younger sister to Bernice and they remained close throughout their lives.

Bernice was well loved, admired, and thoroughly enjoyed by family and friends. She became Valedictorian of her junior high class. She was one of half dozen girls who comprised a group call the "Live Wires," complete with matching satin jackets. Her nick name was "Niecey." She was also fondly called "pretty one."

Bernice graduated from South Philly High School and at age 19 married Charlie Abrams. While their two children, Celia and Jerry were attending school, she worked with Charlie in his Optometry practice; fitting eyeglasses, hearing aids and contact lenses.

Bernice loved art and pursued education thru research and independent study. She attended art appreciation classes at the Barnes Foundation. It was her pleasure to teach "Art Goes to School" classes in Philadelphia Schools.

Known for her knowledge and teaching skills, she was a volunteer docent for 20 years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her peers often shadowed her before conducting their own tours. People enjoyed her passionate inquisitive way of appreciating art. She later became a volunteer docent at Philadelphia Convention Center and Glen Foerd Manor.

Bernice was married to Charles for 63 years prior to his passing. Their son, Jerry became a Family Physician. Her daughter Celia was a Physican Assistant and Fine Artist. Jerry and Marianne have 3 married sons with families. Bernice is survived by grandchildren: Jacob and Amanda (nee Stacy), Daniel and Melisa (nee Rossi), and Nicholas and Corrine (nee Luzak) and great grandchildren Fitzgerald, Isla, Connor, Charlotte, Colter, and Bennett. Bernice is a cherished aunt, cousin, and friend.

Relatives and friends are invited to funeral services on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 12 Noon at Goldsteins Rosenberg Funeral Home, 6410 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19126. Interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Collingdale, PA. Following services and the family will return to Wesley Enhanced Living - Main Line. Shiva will be observed on Friday at the home of Celia Abrams.
