Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our dear Ben, cherished partner, son, brother and friend, on August 9, 2026, after a long illness.

Benjamin Libson Strogatz was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on May 10, 1977, to Barbara (Weiss) Strogatz and Ian A.L. Strogatz. Ben was a graduate of The Shipley School and received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and English from the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to complete his Master of Social Service at Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, and later his LCSW, finding deep meaning in his work as a psychotherapist and clinical social worker in private practice.

Ben was exceptional. He shone with his brilliant wit, his vast and wide-ranging body of knowledge, and his irresistible charm. Yet it was his innate and principled humanity that most defined him, along with a rare ability to connect with others authentically with empathy, nuance, and humor. Ben was an accomplished guitarist and writer, as well as a passionate Phish fan and attended 22 live shows over the years.

Ben is survived by his beloved partner Elissa M. Hughes, his devoted mother Barbara Strogatz Pankhurst, stepparents Mark G. Pankhurst and Toby S. Strogatz, sisters Jennifer R. Strogatz and Melissa Strogatz Burnett (Mark G. Burnett), and nephews George and William Burnett. He was predeceased by his father, Ian A.L. Strogatz.

A celebration of Ben’s life will take place at a later date. Those wishing to honor his memory may make a tribute in his name to causes close to his heart: the Protect Democracy Project and/or the Social Work Graduate Fund at Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research.
