Obituary

Dr. Arthur Erwin Helfand, z"l, 91, of Narberth, PA, beloved husband, father, doctor, mentor, and friend, passed away on July 25 in Haverford, PA.

Arthur Helfand was born in Philadelphia to Esther and Nathan Helfand on January 12, 1935. He graduated from Central High School and Temple University, where he earned a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. He devoted his professional life to podiatry, public health, aging, and caring for others. During Dr. Helfand’s illustrious career, he served in various capacities at the James C. Giuffre Medical Center, Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine), Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, was a consultant for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, served on the boards of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, the Pennsylvania Diabetes Academy, and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Helfand wrote numerous articles and contributed as the editor for several textbooks. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Podiatry Management magazine and earned a fellowship from the American College of Physicians. Aside from helping others, his passions were music, travel, and photography. In 1976, he married the love of his life, Myra Werner. They were married for 50 years. They had two children, Lewis Aaron Helfand and Chana (Jennifer) Basha Helfand.

Dr. Helfand was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Nathan.

He is survived by his wife Myra, children Chana and Lewis, and daughter-in-law Randi. He is dearly loved and will be dearly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to Graveside services Monday at 11 AM precisely at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 2701 Old Lincoln Hwy., Trevose, PA 19053 (Sec. U). Shiva will be observed through Friday at the home of Lewis and Randi Helfand. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
