Arlene Lubin Borden

Arlene Lubin Borden, age 83, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2023. 

Arlene was born in Philadelphia on January 16, 1940, to Helen Price Lubin and Neal Lubin. She attended West Philadelphia High School and Temple University, where she earned a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in British Literature.  

Arlene married her high school sweetheart, Barry Borden, in 1960, and went on to have four children: David (Colleen), Sus3an, Judith (Ron, of blessed memory), and Michael (Miranda). Throughout her life she had a number of careers, including schoolteacher, college instructor, computer store founder, and editor for Time-Life books. Her favorite Time-Life series, on the American West, was the perfect assignment for someone with her love of that region, to which she traveled countless times.  

Arlene was known for her profound empathy, devotion to family and friends, love of long walks in Sarasota and the Atlantic City beach, ability to tell a great story, and joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She was an excellent writer and editor, and a talented amateur artist with a gift for colored pencil and a love for abstract oils. 

Arlene is survived by her beloved husband, four children, two cherished daughters-in-law, and ten grandchildren: Omri, Yaniv, Sam, Lily, Claire, Hannah, Nathalie, Zohara, Alexander, and Calliope; sister Charlotte, cousin Allen (Delia), and nieces Debby and Donna. Preceding her in death are her parents, brother-in-law Jerry, nephews Daniel and Arturo, and son-in-law Ron. 

Services will be held at Beth David Reform Congregation on February 7 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Arlene’s memory to All Faiths Food Bank (allfaithsfoodbank.org) the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF.org), or A Book A Day (abookadayprogram.org).
