It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allen Oscar Gerber. Allen passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024. He was the son of Lewis and Beatrice (Pud) Gerber and brother of the late Bernice Gerber. Allen grew up in West Philadelphia before moving to Merion Station where he was a member of the first graduating class of Harriton High School. Allen was predeceased by his eldest son Brian Gerber and is survived by Sharon Gerber, his loving sons James and Adam Gerber and their wives Abbe and Melissa. Allen is also survived by his five wonderful grandsons Brian (fiancé Andrea Giacobba), Matthew, Daniel, Jack, and Alexander who will all miss “Pop” dearly.
After high school, Allen joined the United States Marines to serve his country. In 1967 Allen and his father Lewis started a packaging company called Provident Packaging Corporation. Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s they worked tirelessly to build the business into the success it is today. Allen had a great passion for Provident and always strived to make his customers feel more like friends and family. He gained the reputation of a hardworking, honest, reliable businessman. When Allen’s sons Jimmy and Adam joined the company it truly became a family business. In 2017 Provident Packaging celebrated 50 successful years. Up until the end of his life, Allen always asked his sons about how the business was doing.
Allen was a huge Philly sports fan and always enjoyed watching the games. He was blessed with five athletic grandsons and he never missed an opportunity to cheer them on at their various sports. Whether it was baseball, basketball, ice hockey or lacrosse, Pop was sure to be in the stands rooting them on. He was also always up for a good game of Uno with his grandsons. In his earlier days, Allen was a frequent beachgoer in Margate, where he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
