Alice Lewis

Alice R. Lewis (neé Lubin) passed away on December 2, 2025 following a brief illness. Alice was the loving and devoted wife of the late Alan Lewis, and the beloved mother of Ethan and Courtney Lewis and Rebecca and Jimmy Wang. She was the adoring eldest sister to Lisa Lazarus, the late Mark Lazarus, Karen and Thomas Piazza and Robert Belchic. Alice was the doting Aunt Beanie to the late Daniel Lazarus. She was preceded in death by parents Anna (Biderman) and Alfred Lubin.

What a life Alice led! Born in 1945 in South Philadelphia, her first language was Yiddish, and she continued to spout idiomatic Yiddish (with a Philadelphia accent) for the rest of her days, while spurring a lifelong love of those phrases in her children. More than a decade older than her sisters, Alice was the first in her family to go to college, graduating from Temple University with a degree in History and subsequently working as a teacher in Philadelphia in the late 1960’s. At heart she was always an educator, spending over 40 years of her life teaching young people.

In 1967, Alice met Alan Lewis, a young Air Force veteran working at his family's marching band uniform business. They fell in love and by August 1968 were married. Two years and two days later, Ethan arrived and exactly one year after that, Rebecca completed the Lewis family. By that time they had purchased a new home on Brook Lane in Warminster, where they stayed until Alan’s death in 1999.

Alice volunteered in the school library when her kids were in elementary school, but when Alan’s health woes led to his permanent disability in the mid-80’s she fell back on her education background and started a state-licensed, home-based childcare business which served dozens of wonderful children. After Alan’s death, Alice and Rebecca moved to Brookline, Massachusetts where Alice worked at a pre-school, and engaged in considerable professional development work. Missing her family, Alice returned to Warminster in 2007, and she continued working in pre-school education, mostly with infants and toddlers, until she was 77 years old. Alice loved children, and they loved her; Ethan and Rebecca are comforted knowing that she helped hundreds of children in their early days of learning to be good people. 

Alice had numerous health issues throughout her life, including surviving colon cancer two years ago, and it is not a stretch to say that she lived daily with chronic pain, but her indomitable work ethic was inspirational to her family and to anyone else who she admitted to her inner circle; those who weren’t “in the know” would never know how hard it was for her to get through her long days of hard work.

Alice loved to read, especially history, and was a devotee of British television. She enjoyed Masterpiece Theatre, Mystery, and East Enders and she greatly appreciated and readily engaged in puns and wordplay of all kinds. In her last months at the hospital she couldn’t easily read a book, but she enjoyed listening to an audio version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, one of her all time favorites. She was also an avid crossword puzzler, a gardener, and loved to cook and bake for her family. To the very end she wanted nothing more than to be an aid and comfort to her family. In her final weeks she intended to move to Virginia to be closer to her children, but unfortunately that was not to be. We are comforted to know that she is finally reunited with Alan, that they are both pain free and reveling in each other’s presence and the chance to shine love on their family forever.
