Alfred E. Goldman of Lafayette Hill passed away on September 5, 2026 at the age of 100. He is survived by his daughter, Julia, his son, Marshall, his granddaughter, Elyssa, and his daughter in law, Roberta.Alfred was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 19, 1925, and raised in The Bronx. He was a very patriotic teenager and at age 17 volunteered in the Aviation Cadet Program. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corp in April, 1944 at 18 and received his Air Crew Wings as a B-17 Radio Operator-Gunner the following year.

After discharge from the military, Al received a bachelor’s degree with honors and a master degree and Certificate in Clinical Psychology (1950). He then attended Clark University (Worcester, Mass) and received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1955.

Al worked as an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University and taught undergraduate psychology. He also taught in the Graduate School of Education and was on the research faculty at the School of Public Health at Harvard University.

In 1956 he joined the Psychology Department at Norristown State Hospital (PA) as Assistant Director, providing psychodiagnostics evaluation and psychotherapy and also had teaching and research responsibilities. He was later appointed the Director of Research at the marketing research company National Analysist (the first Marketing Research firm in the world). Al became one of the leaders in developing the art and science of the Group Depth Interview, one of the key qualitative technologies of survey research, and he published a book by that name, “The Group Depth Interview,” (with Dr. Susan McDonald).

After purchase by Booz, Allen and Hamilton, Al was named President of National Analyst and led projects for many name brand consumer products, medical device manufactures and pharmaceutical companies with his expertise in behavioral research.

Al was the Founding Director of the Council of American Survey Research Organizations and published 15 papers in prestigious publications. He was also invited to give addresses before many professional and trade associations, and in 1980 he was elected a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

However, Al’s children would say that his greatest accomplishments were not as Dr. Goldman, but as a father, husband, friend, mentor, humanitarian, and a volunteer. Al taught his children the ethical foundations of becoming responsible and honorable human beings from the time they were young children. He taught this not only in verbal lessons but with the example of who he was as a person. Julie and Marshall were taught as children that all races, religions and ethnicities are to be equally respected and that his children should always be kind, courteous and fair to others.

After retirement, Al served as Chairman of the Board of ElderNet, a Lower Merion Township non-profit serving the elderly, after initially volunteering for several years. ElderNet helped the elderly and disabled to remain in their homes. Among other activities, he drove these residents of Lower Merion Township to vital appointments and other critical destinations to ensure a priority on their health and safety.

Al was an ardent art photographer. He taught courses in Travel Photography at Temple University and gave educational talks to the Photography Club at The Hill at Whitemarsh, (of which he was a founding member for many years). Al and his wife, Adele, traveled to every continent, and Al enjoyed interacting with and photographing the people of every country they traveled to.

A memorial service for Al will be held at ­1:00 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Suburban North, 310 2nd Street Pike, Southampton, PA 18966.
