Albert "Al" A. Chazin, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, at the age of 96. Born in Chester, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1929, Al was a true Delaware County, PA man, living his life in DELCO up until the last few years. More recently, Al lived in Voorhees, New Jersey, at Lion’s Gate, where he received much needed love and delicate care. Al dedicated his life first and foremost to his family, his Jewish community, and his career. He was a Blue-Collar, hard-working man to his core.
Al graduated from Chester High School in 1947 and subsequently served our country in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant and receiving both the National Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
After returning from military service, Al continued working at Acme Markets, for what became a lifetime career. He worked in the Produce Department for 48 years, starting at the young age of 14. His dedication and hard work earned him recognition, culminating in an article by the Delco Times titled "Legendary Green Grocer Retires" at the time of his retirement in 1992.
A lifelong member of Congregation Ohev Shalom in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, formerly Mispallelim Shul in Chester, Al was devoted to his faith and his community. Al proudly took on a leadership role as B'nai Brith President of the Simon Wolf Lodge 937 from 1982 to 1984. In his retirement, he was a regular attendee of morning and Shabbat services from 1994 until 2019. Al's contributions extended beyond regular attendance; he volunteered in the synagogue office for many years. He was eventually honored for his exemplary service, and was presented with the Ohev Shalom Meritorious Service Award in October 2004.
Al had a presence. His booming voice and large stature made sure that he was always noticed in any gathering. When Al was surrounded by his siblings, the joy and laughter to those fortunate enough to be in their company was contagious. Al was an avid fan of Philadelphia sports, particularly the Eagles and Phillies. He also had lists of sayings and memorable quotes, that those who knew him will cherish forever.
Family was at the heart of Al’s existence. He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Kroungold, and Erica (Josh) Laster. He took immense pride in being "Pop-Pop" to his grandchildren, Emma and Abby Kroungold and Isabella and Masyn Laster. He is also survived by his youngest brother, Bernie (Linda) Chazin, Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law, Stanley and Sharon Kotzen, and many nieces and nephews.
Al is predeceased by the love of his life, Ruth Kotzen Chazin, parents Hyman and Eva Chazin, and siblings Harry (Helen) Chazin, Sarah (Leo) Simons, Jacob (Zelda) Chazin, Abraham (Doris) Chazin, and Morris (Barbara) Chazin.
Al's outlook on life, unwavering commitment to family, and gregarious personality will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched. He leaves behind quite a legacy.
